Call for Action: Write a Blog Entry to Help the Public

As part of our response to the events in Ferguson and after, SCP is hosting a public blog series for 2015. We want to help the public make sense of what they see in the news, act in a more socially just way, and understand how Counseling Psychology helps society respond to racial injustice.

Our goal is to have 12-15 blog entries posted throughout 2015, written by you (Counseling Psychologists and students) for the public. We will post the blog online and link to it on social media and listservs. The blog will also be noted in the April edition of the APA Monitor.

The focus of the blog series is “racial injustice” broadly. We hope to include your writing about, but not limited to:

  • Ferguson and recent racial injustice against Black Americans
  • How counseling psychologists are working with police
  • White and other allies’ responses to these events
  • Critical and constructive commentary on the Black Lives Matter movement
  • Racial and ethnic injustice against different groups and communities (e.g., Muslim Americans, Indigenous peoples, immigration policy)

Similar to APA’s Public Interest blog, we would like our blog posts to meet the needs of the public.

  • Length should be 300-500 words
  • Include a great title
  • Include a call to action or questions for the reader to consider at the end
  • Use a more informal tone and break down information for the public to understand
  • Consider using a mix of personal experience and research (link to or list citations)

Please submit your proposed blog entry to Bryana French and Katharine Hahn Oh at [email protected] with “After Ferguson” in the title of your email. All submissions will be reviewed, and we reserve the right to decline or edit submissions (you will be consulted before we post). If you have an idea for a blog entry and would like our input, please feel free to write to us.

We hope to receive several submissions before the end of March to kick off the blog, so don’t delay!
