Call for Applications for the Next Editor of
the The Counseling Psychologist

Nominations (including self-nominations) are sought for Editor of The Counseling Psychologist (TCP). The Editor of TCP, the Society of Counseling Psychology's official journal, is a member of the Society’s Communications and Technology Board. The Editor shall assume responsibility for the content of TCP and maintain a relationship with the publisher. The Editor recommends to the Society’s Executive Board for approval contract negotiations with the publisher, policy changes, and new appointments to the editorial board. The Editor shall be appointed by the Executive Board for a 6-year term which runs from 2026-2032, with a 12-18-month period of responsibilities as Editor-elect prior to the commencement of the formal term.

Application materials should include 1) a cover letter that includes a statement of interest in the position; a description of relevant editorial, publication, and leadership experience; a description of experience and engagement with the field of counseling psychology; and a vision for the future of TCP; 2) a vita; and 3) three letters of support that address the criteria for the next TCP Editor. These application materials will be used to determine who best matches the established for selecting the next editor of TCP.

The selection committee also includes: Mary O’Jeary Wiley, Lisa Flores, Joel Wong, and Laura Reid Marks, with Bryan Kim (current editor) serving as ex-officio.

Criteria

Criteria for selecting the next Editor of The Counseling Psychologist (TCP)

    1. A well-articulated vision for TCP, including

a. a broad view of counseling psychology and its values and principles, and an understanding of the history of counseling psychology;
b. the identification of future directions, needs, and critical issues during the next ten years;
c. an understanding of and commitment to promoting interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scholarship to move beyond the traditional boundaries of psychology and engage other social sciences, health sciences, humanities, and beyond;
d. the ability to adopt new uses of technology within the publishing and national/international arenas to reach diverse constituents.

    2. The ability to promote and enhance high quality scholarship, including

a. a demonstrated record of high quality, nationally recognized scholarship;
b. extensive experience and expertise in publishing\editing\reviewing quality journals, special journal issues, books, and refereed publications; 
c. the ability to promote diverse empirical (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed) research designs, and theoretical, conceptual, and methodological approaches; 
d. a commitment to an educative/mentoring approach in support of the development and refinement of manuscripts. 

    3. The capacity to oversee and manage a large publication enterprise, including

a. strong leadership, management, and communication skills, characterized by a commitment to integrity, and professional standards and ethics;
b. an understanding of budget management;
c. the ability to maintain a tight schedule of publishing, manage a constant stream of manuscripts, and adjust the publication queue of manuscripts to fill issues;
d. maintaining a collaborative and collegial relationships with the outgoing (and later, incoming) editors to transition the journal;
e. the ability to maintain and enhance impact ratings, and understand causal factors within impact ratings;

f. the ability to use technology effectively.

    4. A strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, including

a. strong demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice with an appreciation for multicultural, cross-cultural, and international issues relating to all relevant dimensions of counseling psychology, including the new SCP values https://www.div17.org/mission-values;
b. the ability to promote publications and solicit manuscript submissions that thoughtfully engage in issues pertaining to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice;

c. the ability to recruit and retain a diverse editorial and production team (e.g., editorial board, associate editors, ad hoc reviewers, staff).

    5. An appreciation for the responsibilities associated with TCP’s large voice in Counseling Psychology, including

a. a short and long term vision for TCP that promotes and reflects the values of Counseling Psychology;
b. the capacity to creatively and effectively reach out to diverse members;
c. the knowledge of Counseling Psychology as a professional organization within broader arenas (e.g., political, social forces), as well as in psychology in general;
d. the ability to represent the interests, vision, and goals of TCP within the context of the Society for Counseling Psychology;
e. the ability to effectively engage with various stakeholders in SCP, APA, publishers, media outlets, and others.
