This program is one of the outcomes of a Presidential Initiative focused on Centering Indigenous People and Perspectives. This centering is critical to SCP as a discipline and a division. As part of this initiative, Indigenous counseling psychologists participated in 1) a Special Task Group (STG) and 2) a series of community building events to accomplish this vision. The purpose was to bring together a diverse group of Indigenous counseling psychologists to dream about a counseling psychology that truly includes and celebrates Indigenous people and perspectives. In this program, Indigenous counseling psychologists will address how indigenous knowledge systems can be applied to the foundations of psychology, psychotherapy, training, and the Society of Counseling Psychology.

Maryam Jernigan-Noesi, Janet E. Helms, and Carlton E. Green in June 2021 to conduct an organizational assessment and provide consultation to the division with the purpose of dismantling anti-Black racism in SCP and beyond. The scope of work was conducted over the course of one year and included three phases: Phase I) initial assessment and recommendations, Phase II) focus group and individual interviews comprised of people offering varying perspectives from varying social locations with particular attention three groups, namely Black-identified, all other People of Color, and white members, non-members, and former members and leaders of SCP, and Phase III) recommendations for systemic change and a plan for implementation with attention to the current strategic plan.
The results of Phase III will be shared in this special forum and will bring attention to key factors that have contributed to anti-Black racism as well as changes that can be made to dismantle anti-Black racism and bring greater equity to BIPOC and other minoritized members of SCP.
