Nancy S. Elman, Ph.D., wins the 2017 APA Distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training in Psychology Award


Nancy S. Elman, Ph.D., was chosen for the 2017 American Psychological Association (APA) Distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training in Psychology Award.

Nancy S. Elman, Ph.D., ABPP, earned her Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh, where she is now Emeritus Faculty of the Department of Psychology in Education. For 20 of her 40 years at Pitt, Dr. Elman was coordinator of training in the Doctoral Program in Counseling Psychology and also maintained a private practice providing individual, couple, and family therapy. Dr. Elman’s passion and commitment to investigating professional competence problems has resulted in many scholarly publications and presentations on professional competence, competence problems, and psychology training; issues of great practical significance for educators and trainers.

In addition to her many scholarly contributions, Dr. Elman’s has contributed in numerous ways to the APA, including serving on the Executive Board of the Society of Family Psychology (Division 43), the Executive Committee of the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs (CCPTP), the Advisory Committee on Colleague Assistance (BEA), and the Ad Hoc Work Group on Trainee Competence Problems (BEA).  Additionally, she represented CCPTP on APA’s Commission on Education for two terms, serving as Chair in 2011, and on the APA Committee on Ethics.

Dr. Elman has been recognized for her accomplishments in numerous ways. In 2001 she received the Fourth Annual Legacy Award from the Greater Pittsburgh Psychological Association, and in 2011 she was honored with CCPTP’s Lifetime Contribution to Education and Training in Counseling Psychology Award. Dr. Elman is also a Fellow of both the Society of Family Psychology and Society of Counseling Psychology. Her leadership through scholarly works on professional competence and the service she has provided through major leadership positions to education and training psychology organizations make Dr. Elman an ideal recipient of this year’s APA Award for Distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training in Psychology.
