Lawrence H. Gerstein, Ph.D., wins the 2019 APA Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology


Lawrence H. Gerstein, Ph.D., was chosen for the 2019 American Psychological Association (APA) Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology Award.

Lawrence “Larry” H. Gerstein earned a B.B.A. in public administration and psychology from the Bernard Baruch College, and a M.A. in rehabilitation counseling and Ph.D. in counseling and social psychology from the University of Georgia. Currently, he is a Ball State University George and Frances Ball Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies, Fulbright Research Scholar at the City University of Hong Kong and Southwest Minzu University (China), and Co-Editor of the Journal for Social Action in Counseling and Psychology.

Larry is a Fellow in the American Psychological Association ([APA] Divisions of Counseling, Peace, and International Psychology), former Fulbright Scholar at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and an expert in cross-cultural methodology, social justice, conflict prevention and resolution, emotion, and sports for youth development. He has published 100+ refereed journal articles, and four books including Theories of Counseling and Psychotherapy, International Handbook of Cross-Cultural Counseling, and Handbook for Social Justice in Counseling Psychology.

Larry has received over $2 million (U.S. dollars) in external funding, including four U.S. Department of State grants and one U.S. Institute of Peace grant. He has engaged in various types of professional activities including peace related work in China, England, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Jordan, Korea, Myanmar, Pakistan, Portugal, St. Vincent Island, Taiwan, and Tajikistan. Gerstein is a past Co-Editor of The Counseling Psychologist International Forum.

Gerstein has been honored with many awards including, for example, the National Multicultural Conference and Summit Elder Award, APA Division 48 (Peace Psychology) Ignacio Martín-Baró Lifetime Peace Practitioner Award, APA Division 52 (International Psychology) International Psychologist of the Year Award, APA Division 17 (Counseling Psychology) International Section Lifetime Achievement Award, APA Division 52 (International Psychology) Henry David International Mentoring Award, APA Division 52 (International Psychology) Ursula Gielen Global Psychology Book Award, American Counseling Association Kitty Cole Human Rights Award, and American Association for Counseling and Development Carl D. Perkins Government Relations Award.

Larry loves to immerse himself in different cultures around the globe to better understand, respect, embrace, and grow from the similarities and unique qualities such opportunities offer.
