Greetings Division 17 members!
Below you will find information on some specific awards coming due this fall. Brief details on award criteria and requirements are also listed. Please consider nominating members of Division 17 for these and other awards throughout the year. This is oneway that we can demonstrate and publicize all of the outstanding scholarly and clinical work being done by counseling psychologists. Note that several student awards are included.

Name of Award: Early Graduate Student Researcher Awards (Student award)

Criteria/Notes: The purpose of the Early Graduate Student Researcher Awards program is to recognize students for conducting outstanding research early in their graduate training (i.e., research conducted within the first two years of doctoral study). The award focuses on both the student’s general research experience and specific completed research projects. The research independence of the applicant as well as the novelty and implications of research performed as a graduate student will be used for evaluation purposes. Therefore preference may be given to students who have completed their second year of doctoral studies.

Name of Award: APA Dissertation Research Awards (Student Award)
Type of Award: APA, Science Directorate

Criteria/Notes: Assists doctoral students with dissertation research expenses. Applies to any area of research within psychology. Approximately 30-40 grants are awarded ($1,000 each), and several are awarded up to $5,000. Applicants must be full-time graduate students in the United States or Canada who are working on dissertation research. Dissertation proposals must have already been approved by their dissertation committee prior to application. Applicants who have already defended their dissertations are eligible to apply for funds as long as they have not yet received a doctoral degree as of the application deadline. Must be student affiliates or associate member of APA (or apply for affiliation along with application materials). Each psychology department may endorse only three applications. Must have not previously received an APA Dissertation Award.

Name of Award: APS Mentor Award
Type of Award: APS
Criteria/ Notes: The APS Mentor Award honors the importance of mentoring in our field as well as the dedication and impact of individuals with a distinguished record of teaching, advising, and encouraging students and colleagues who go on to have productive and influential research careers. To nominate a candidate for the APS Mentor Award, an online nomination form needs to be completed (see the websites). The nominee must be an APS member and nominations should include the following documents: 1) Nomination letter describing the nominee’s mentoring process as well as the impact of the mentor’s influence on the careers of students and/or colleagues. 2) List of PhDs and Postdoc mentees (or others) with a very brief (i.e. one paragraph) description of their accomplishments 3) CV of the nominee 4) Two to five letters of support from mentees, one of whom must be an APS member. Name of Award: Janet Taylor Spence Award For Transformative Early Career Contributions

Criteria/ Notes: The APS Janet Taylor Spence Award recognizes transformative early career contributions to psychological science. Award winners should reflect the best of the many new and cutting edge ideas coming out of our most creative and promising investigators who, together, embody the future of psychological science. Nominees must be members of the Association for Psychological Science and must have completed their PhD within eight years of the date of the annual meeting at which the award would be conferred. Research contributions can be transformative in various ways, such as the establishment of new approaches or paradigms within a field of psychology, or the development or advancement of research that cuts across fields of psychological science. The common thread is that Award winners should reflect the best of the many new and cutting edge ideas coming out of our most creative and promising investigators who, together, embody the future of psychological science.
Letters of nomination and support should specifically address the nominee’s work with respect to the following selection criteria: (1) is the research novel and creative? (2) does the research have the potential to change how we think about psychological science? (3) is the research characterized by rigorous and innovative scientific methods? Name of Award: Charles L. Brewer Distinguished Teaching of Psychology Award

Criteria/Notes: This award recognizes a psychologist with significant career contributions and a record of being an exceptional teacher of psychology. The award is in the amount of $2,000, plus all-expense paid trip to the APA annual convention where the award is presented. Applications must include the following materials: nomination statement describing nominee’s commitment to teaching, nominee’s current CV, and up to 10 letters of recommendation from colleagues, administrators, and former students. Nominees must demonstrate and will be rated on the following dimensions:
- Demonstrated influence as a teacher whose students became outstanding psychologists: names and careers of nominee’s students and evidence of influence as a teacher of them.
- Development of effective teaching methods and/or teaching materials.
- Engagement in significant research or other creative activity on teaching.
- Development of innovative curricula and courses: description and sample of innovation and evidence of its successful utilization.
- Outstanding performance as a teacher in and outside the classroom: student ratings, enrollment figures, evaluative observation by colleagues, teaching awards and other forms of prior recognition.
- An especially effective trainer of teachers of psychology: description of the contributions and evidence of effectiveness.
- Outstanding teaching of advanced research methods and practice in psychology (advanced undergraduate, graduate or other): description of classroom and mentoring roles.
- Responsible for administrative facilitation of outstanding teaching: description of administrative actions and results on teaching programs; evaluation by others of actions and results.
